There’s something immediately tangible about programming that design doesn’t seem to have, although technically web development falls under the graphic design discipline. Plus there’s the fulfillment of my obsession with detail and organization. I wrote my new website from scratch excepting the javascript; I can’t seem to wrap my head around the language yet. But reading CSS or HTML makes sense to me. (A total admission of my geekhood) Overall it was an enjoyable process, and I hope to get paid to do some more web work.

Unfortunately this is not a report of some debilitating disease from a lab test gone bad that spreads through the population like wildfire, turning people into zombies. This is just me taking account of my inability to write a blog post. Kinda pathetic really. But it’s a turning point, even though it’s taken me a few days shy of a month to post the results of the beginning of my 29th year.

I’ve decided that New Year’s day is no longer January 1st, it’s September 29th. Technically (at 8:01 p.m. MST), that day is when a new year of my life begins. The number 29, for some reason or other has taken on a level of importance that other advents have not. Perhaps it is because I turned 29 on the 29th during 2(00)9. Regardless of the reason, I’ve selected 29 goals that I’m calling my Prime Objectives. (Cheesy and lame, I know. Make sure to comment about that. Lol)

In the end, I plan on improving the quality of my life over the next year, and the Prime Objectives are the means.

At the close of a long day at work, my co-worker Brad turned to me and said, “You’ve been ffffound!”. To my disbelief, I saw the logo concept I had designed for the New York Public Library staring back at me from his computer screen.

Now for the explanation: As designers, we often look for inspiration as we do our work. At Hint, this has become an essential element of how we keep up with design trends. Christian (the boss) likes mantras and one of his is Good Design In, Good Design Out—referring to necessity of the “recharge” or inspiration to continue doing good design. ffffound.com is one site that we refer to fairly regularly and it’s both flattering and terrifying that my work has now made it on to the site.

This ought to provide me with the sufficient motivation to finish my website. So…

After gasping for air for the last few days, running around trying to tie up lose ends on this project and that test, it was immensely refreshing to walk out of my last final, pause for a moment, and take a deep breath. I was the first to finish the final in my Business Management class. I took a refreshing look at the last final of the semester, picked up my things and walked toward the front of the classroom. After handing the instructor the test and the answer sheet, he walked me out and shuttled me to the nearest empty room and requested to see my portfolio. I was flattered by the unexpected attention, but also dying to get home and sleep after a 42-hour stint of sleep depravation. And yet here I am writing about the whole thing and still not sleeping—such a masochist. So, at that I’m off to bed.

I have two more finals to take and my BFA to finish, but most everything else has tapered to a close. I’ll hopefully be updating my website within the next couple weeks with more work. I might be undertaking an overhaul of my blog also, but we’ll see.

Graduation is in less than a week, and I’m excited to start another chapter of my life without school—finally being able to read my extensive list of books and focus solely on type design (apart from work, that is)

Dallas Graham, the owner of Montage Creative has started a personal project that delves into the depths of individuals artistic endeavors—as deep as you can get in 45 minutes. Daily Documentary is a year-long project to interview and photograph a person a day. I was lucky enough to participate and thought I’d pass it one. Take a look.
